Letter calling for findings of Raphoe report

category national | crime and justice | press release author Friday October 28, 2011 10:29author by PAW - People's Association Watchdog

Open Letter to AnTaoiseach Enda Kenny T.D., Alan Shatter T.D. And all concerned parties in the Raphoe Report: After many delays of the Raphoe report, which is being investigated by The National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church (NBSCCC), we are requesting that the abuse survivors do not have to wait any longer for their findings. This report when it is finally completed will be forwarded to the Bishop of Raphoe who will decide when to make it public.

The survivors of abuse outlined in the Raphoe report have been failed time and time again, as children they were not protected, as adults they have not been shown due regard and any further delay in furnishing the findings of the report to them is a continuation of this failure and lack of due consideration to those victims.

The diocese contained some of Ireland’s most notorious paedophile priests, including Fr Eugene Greene, who was jailed for 12 years in 2000 for the rape and sexual assault of 26 boys. A total of six priests from the Raphoe Diocese have so far been brought to justice for their crimes. There are many victims of this abuse and the details of further abusers are expected to be released with this report. The victims deserve the truth and closure, further delays causes even more unnecessary suffering and stress. We would also request that the non edited report is presented to the victims and that there is full transparency in the investigation and findings of the NBSCCC.

We would ask you to lend your support to the victims of abuse in the Raphoe and other diocese by ensuring the prompt release of the findings.
