Cork - Event Notice Thursday January 01 1970 Parade in Defiance, Saturday, Dec. 3rd., 1:30pm
Occupy Cork invites everyone opposed to the current austerity regime out in force on Saturday, Dec. 3rd. Assembling outside the opera house at Emmet Place at 1:30pm, we will march down the quay, up Patrick St. and down South Mall, back to Emmet Place. There we will hold a general assembly at which anyone can speak.
![Click on image to see full-sized version parade_in_defiance_poster2.jpg](../cache/imagecache/local/attachments/nov2011/460_0___30_0_0_0_0_0_parade_in_defiance_poster2.jpg) In the face of the looming budget of December 6th, we are calling on all
people who feel that this situation is unjust and who are seeking
positive change to stand together – to march, dance, shout, sing – on
the streets of Cork, our streets. We plan to get out in numbers and hold
as colourful and powerful a demonstration as we can possibly muster up,
in the city centre on Saturday afternoon. Our plan is to meet at
Emmet Place, outside the Opera House at 1:30pm, to leave at 2pm heading along the quay, up
St. Patrick St., down Grand Parade, past the Occupy Cork camp on South
Mall and right down South Mall and along the quay back to Emmet
Place again. We will end the march with a space for music, theatre and
performance; and above all, a voice for all - whoever wishes to speak
will be heard. Let’s assemble in Cork City, organise and express
ourselves. Similar actions on this date will be co-ordinated with
Occupy camps in Dublin, Waterford and Galway. A solidarity action from
Occupy Belfast has also been proposed. Cork Community Art Link
have already offered to facilitate creative workshops in prop, puppet,
placard and banner making and also in street theatre and performance in
their space at 107 Shandon Street. They will be available from 10-6pm,
Friday 25th and 12-6pm, Saturday 26th, for some initial sessions, while
more times will be added throughout next week in the build-up to
Saturday. If you or your friends, family, community group or co-workers
have an idea for a message you want to get out there before the budget,
then they can facilitate. We, the people experiencing this recession
first-hand should be the ones out on the streets asserting our dignity,
our defiance, our creativity and our collective power. Whatever your
colours, get out and fly your flag, raise your banner – this demo needs
no political agenda other than to state that we will no longer accept
this kind of treatment lying down. If you have the will to
start thinking about alternatives, then together we have the capacity to
make them happen. If you're tired of politics being reduced to the same
party agendas then get in touch and come out on December 3rd. We
know that no one demonstration is going to fix all of these issues, but
it can be a step towards creating a more just society. Let’s make this
gathering a landmark in that process!
