How to become a terrorist

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Friday July 25, 2014 08:36author by v for vendetta

The Intercept has published the guidelines whereby a person can be labelled a terrorist and
put on a no fly list by the US government. These are very vague and broad and it would be remarkably easy to end up on this list for a principled social activist, merely exercising their democratic right to protest

While this may seem somewhat academic to activists in Ireland, really it is not.

Because these lists are shared with many other foreign governments and are used as a basis for "extra measures" by state actors whenever they encounter such flagged "terrorists". Prepare yourself for a world of hurt in all your previously routine interactions with the gardai, airport security and at border crossings if you manage to get yourself on this list

"And you deserve every extra rubber gloved personal intrusion you get
if you are a nasty bomb wearing Jihadist loon" some people might think to themselves.

Trouble is, as the above linked document clearly reveals, the criteria used are very vague
and broad and you don't have to have explosive underpants, shoes or breastmilk to end up on a no fly list and
be branded a terrorist by the US government these days.

Even a few errant twitter and facebook posts might be enough to get you on one of these lists.
And once you are on, you don't get off. Even if you die. (Yes it's true. I'm quite serious!!)

Probably the only way off, if you are a muslim is to agree to inform on your own community for the FBI.
a very dangerous position to be put in by the state for you and your family.

In 2001, there were only 16 on this list. Now there are tens of thousands of people on it.
