Sociologists explore the cultural reproduction of human-nonhuman animal relations in childhood.
Focusing on the socialization of the human use of other animals in contemporary Western society, Matthew Cole & Kate Stewart explore the cultural reproduction of human-nonhuman animal relations in childhood. 10th December at The Outhouse, 7pm, Free entry.
With close attention to the dominant practices through which children encounter animals and mainstream representations of animals in children's culture, this presentation and Q&A based on the new book, Our Children and Other Animals: The Cultural Construction of Human-Nonhuman Animal Relations in Childhood, reveals the interconnectedness of studies of childhood, culture and human-animal relations.
We recognise that the dominant culture in Ireland is deeply speciesist. Join Matthew and Kate in identifying the social forces that shape childrens' ethical views. Most importantly, explore with these authors and researchers what those who want to bring about meaningful change and justice for others can do.
