PRESS RELEASE - Anti-War Activist to Conduct Vigil outside of Gallipoli Barracks during Today's Deployment

category international | anti-war / imperialism | press release author Tuesday April 14, 2015 21:01author by Plowshares

Veteran Brisbane peace activist Ciaron O'Reilly will stage an anti-war vigil today outside Gallipoli Barracks as 330 troops
deploy to Iraq. O'Reilly was imprisoned in the United States for disabling a B52 Bomber on the eve of the
1991 Gulf War. In 2003, he was among five activists charged in Ireland with $2.5 million criminal damage to a U.S.
war plane en route to the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

O'Reilly stated,
"Sending these troops to Iraq has nothing to do with defending Australia. It has everything to do
with blindly following U.S. foreign policy in a disastrous trajectory that has led to this expanding
and escalating sectarian war across the Middle East.

This is the latest phase in a U.S. war that began with 1991 bombardments, followed by genocidal sanctions
and the 2003 U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. Sending Australian troops as cannon fodder to defend a corrupt,
sectarian, brutal Iraqi government is a cynical and sycophantic action by the Abbot government. All Australians
opposed to this war need to be speaking out and acting up at this time. Australian complicity, from the hi tech
targeting role of Pine Gap to deployment of ground troops, needs to be nonviolently resisted".
