You may know that four people were arrested recently after a peaceful sit-down protest at the Netherlands embassy on 15 August. This has helped to highlight to some extent the Netherlands failure to call for the implementation of the Agreement it signed on that date 40 years before, which included a clause agreeing to an act of "self-determination in accordance with international practice" in West Papua by 1969. It never happened, and West Papuans have been suffering brutality, murder, rape and torture as a result.

However the truth is coming out! And an movement for human rights and self-determination is growing both in Ireland and internationally.

The last meeting of the Forum discussed West Papua with West Papuan priest Fr. Neles Tebay. Some of the practical suggestions made there included: holding a vigil at the Netherlands embassy on 15 August (which happened); information campaigns (both on the general question and the reality of human rights abuses); lobbying politicians; lobbying institutions and NGOs. It was suggested the role of corporations needed to be explored; also the role of the Netherlands government. It was also suggested Ambassadors to the UN needed to be targeted.
