Conflicting accounts of Papua killings
JAKARTA - Conflicting accounts of the killing in disputed West Papua of
two
American teachers, an Indonesian and the wounding of at least 10 others
were
offered at the weekend, writes David Shanks.
A news agency report, quoting the local Indonesian military chief, said
the
violence was by "an armed band"; but the Free Papua Movement said the
incidents were "orchestrated by the Indonesian military". And a human
rights activist, Mr John Rumbiak, also suggesting this, said it was
"strongly related" to the army's wish to see the resumption of ties
suspended since the last days of the occupation of East Timor.
The military chief, Maj-Gen Mahidin Simbolon, is himself accused of
atrocities in Timor.
