Slawomir Wiatr, Polish minister in charge of European information, allegedly in office to convince Poles to vote "yes" in a EU referendum planned next year confessed he had worked for the communist spy service.
Although minister Wiatr did not give details of his spying cooperation - saying only his activity did not target any individual or organisation, he came under fire from both EU-proponents and critics urging him to step down. It is obligatory under Polish law for top governmental officials to declare whether they co-operated with the communist service or not.
Could undermine Yes-campaign:
Centre-right "Yes" campaigners argue that Mr Wiatr's past links could undermine the trust of at least part of Polish society for an information campaign led by him. EU-criticals of the League of Polish Families say he is a Soviet agent. "Agents who tried to convince us of the benefits of Soviet domination are now doing the same with the EU," said a leader of the League.
