Corporate Europe Observer on Nice and Democratic Deficit on Trade Issues as Result of Nice Treaty
In previous issues of the Corporate Europe Observer, we have reported European industry lobby groups campaigning to influence the negotiations on the new EU Treaty, which was finalised at the Summit in Nice in December 2000. One of the main corporate demands was for further centralisation of the EU's decision-making on international trade, through changes in the EU Treaty's Article 133. Diverse NGOs and grassroots groups from around Europe campaigned against giving the European Commission "fast-track" powers, which would further deepen the democratic gap.
