The idea, the proposal

We are working to create of a group of people (100/150) who will take part in a Theatre Workshop in Florence during the week previous to the opening of the Forum (30 October/5 November).

18-08-2002

The Workshop would be organised in daily sessions lasting 6/8 hours during the afternoon and evening hours and would aim to produce a "Performance" for the opening day of the European Social Forum (6 November) as a "welcome" to all the citizens of the world who will be arriving to take part in the four days' work in Florence.

The work in progress:
From 30 October and 5 November: the workshop
6 November. Evening performance.

10 working groups in each individual 'mini' staff: Director and co-workers to work with at least 10 and not more than 15 people for an idea lasting around 6/8 minutes.

Independent rehearsal space and work at the Event location during the last three days.

Side initiatives
7 November: Workshop for the exchange of comments on the experience led by the groups.
8 November: European forum on political Theatre in the age of permanent global conflict.

The group We shall form an art work group, a multiethnic group, inviting young activists from the Social Forums and not from Europe, coming from different cultural latitudes, from areas of cohabitation already existing in our territory (the African hemisphere, the Balkans, Latin America, East Europe, the various communities, etc.) and from countries that will interact through their delegations to create the European Social Forum in Florence.

The work space for the groups

We have intentionally given importance to the creation of a close relationship with the city and this is taking the concrete form of a survey of the independent and institutional social, artistic and cultural situations that might be able to take part in supporting the Project, by offering - either in Florence or the immediate vicinity – spaces equipped and prepared to host 10 workshops during the initial phase – 4/5 days – of preparation for the Event.

Our choice is based on the assumption that "we belong to the territory – with no exclusions".

Participation

Those who arrive in Florence would have the chance to take part (completely free) in the Workshop and offer their practical help for the "building" of the Forum (as required and for at least one/two hours a day). This would be an opportunity for learning and for cultural exchange and a practical demonstration of what we all desire for the future of the world's peoples.

Running the Workshop

The workshop will be guided by a pool of directors, playwrights, poets, women and men, who support the Project. Italian artists who have proved to be close to the experiences of the movement and of specific interest in terms of: the social and political commitment of their drama, familiarity with the dreams and desires of social groups over the territory and with cultural differences.

Plenty of commitment, sympathy for the cause of the ESF, placing their experience at the service of the project. None of the artists will receive payment.

Promoted by the ESF Organisation (because of its essential significance as a cultural proposal) it will be the worthiest and most spectacular way of marking the opening of the Forum and will become an element for active participation in the creation of the four days in November.

Thanks to the fact that the participants from the various different countries meet, live together and share their work, this event will vividly embody the spirit that animates the movement internationally.

In a single, unique collective experience.
