MTV: Enough is ENOUGH

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday September 18, 2002 14:27author by Shemia Muhammad

MTV has chosen to prohibit Chuck D and Public Enemy from showing a Video because a political activist such as Mumia Abu-Jamal is shown briefly.

To:  MTV

My name is Shemia Muhammad, a member of Here-After Records. I am appalled by MTV's choice to not play Public Enemy's video. I did not think Online petitions were effective. Yet I am going to submit this one, because people from all over
the world use the computer, and people all over the world deserve to participate in this method of freedom of speech.

MTV has chosen to prohibit Chuck D and Public Enemy from showing a Video because a political activist such as Mumia Abu-Jamal is shown briefly. I say to MTV, how HYPOCRITICAL! MTV continues to show videos that reek of lewd sexual nature and discussion of violence, drugs, violence against women, in particular Black Women. MTV played, "Because I got high" over
and over again. I guess that song stayed in rotation because of the marketing techniques of MTV. I am tired of the commercialism that goes on in the music industry, and the vain profits that are gathered at the expense of our youth, and community at large.

I, Shemia Muhammad, at Here After Records
stand by Chuck D's initiative to speak the truth, and believe until MTV plays the video, like BET then the Black community and those that respect Hip-Hop should no longer watch its channel. If you find MTV's ban on Public Enemy unfair, please join our petition.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
