Austrian government gives up neutrality

"There is no room for neutrality in the European Union," Austrian chancellor, Wolfgang Schüssel told party members Sunday at the end of a three day ÖVP party congress in Alpbach.

"We are a non-alligned and not continuously neutral country," added the Austrian minister of Defence, Herbert Scheibner from the Austrian Freedom Party, which forms the government in coalition with the conservative ÖVP party.
In a new doctrine from the party Austrian NATO entry must be contained as an option. Everything else would be "paradoxically ", according to Mr. Scheibner.

The Green Party and the Social Democrats have expressed eased reactions to this change in Austrian politics, according to the Austrian newspapers.

The Austrian government is the second of the neutral European countries talking about giving up neutrality. In December the Swedish Social Democratic Party, who currently are in power, also began debating Sweden giving up the status as a neutral state.
