IRISH OBSERVER FEARS FOR SAFETY OF IMC PALESTINE

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday April 02, 2002 00:04author by blissett

RELAYED FROM MARY KELLY - BETHLEHEM

Fears have been expressed that an attack or bombing of imc palestine is imminent as the Israelis have realised that it is where most information from within the 'military zones' is coming from. This information has come from Mary Kelly - an Irish Civilian Observer in Bethlehem - via phone to a member of the IMC Ireland collective in the last hour or so. Any ideas on what can be done from here?

Tactical decision: covert? or overt?

At the moment, I would suggest drawing attention to the site and to the offices, in the style of "Take pictures!!" on the front line.

Without knowing internationals' disposition in that area, this might be foolish, but: along with the above, couple as many obviously peaceful functions with IMC comms, i.e. without running the risk of decapitation, make sure the center is not isolated by having related functions co-located. (In QC, they nailed the medics forward aid station and then toed the line after they moved into IMC lobby. I'm not saying that's causal, but that's what happened.)

What's the chance of getting other groups to co-locate their facilities? Again, without inviting decapitation, to reduce the risk of isolation and increase visibility and ease of overview for whoever is functioning as observers.

p.s.1 Timely situation reports will increase site traffic
p.s.2 "fuck all" is the pessimism allowed only those whose asses aren't on the line.
