Cork Peace Alliance PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (one page) Date: 12th October, 2002 SUBJECT: Successful Mass Action at Shannon
Hundreds of protesters from all over Ireland converged on Shannon Airport today, Saturday 12th October to protest at the use of the airport as a refuelling stop for U.S. warplanes.
After blocking the road at the main entrance to the airport for two hours, and observing a minute’s silence for the victims of American bombs, demonstrators left the outside of the terminal building.
A peaceful mass trespass involving over a hundred protesters then took place. Ten participants in the mass trespass action were arrested.
Cork Peace Alliance spokesperson Owen Butler said:
“We are delighted with the way today’s protest unfolded. This was a successful non-violent action highlighting the use of Shannon Airport by U.S. Warplanes. We will continue our actions until this unconstitutional breach of Irish neutrality stops!”
