The Cardinal was saying mass to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers, a community which has been closely linked with schools and education in the State. As the mass went ahead in the headquarters of the Royal Dublin Society, the men and women involved in the protest - some of whom said they were victims of abuse by Catholic priests - made emotional demands for Cardinal Connell's resignation. This whole abuse scandal is tragic. There are no winners here (maybe the media) and no-one should be able to hide behind stained glass windows. The Fortune story encompasses priests gardai politicians and ordinary people, all who looked the other way, all who are responsible. Today there are many victims who may still be suffering, is child sex abuse by priests and others in authority continuing right now? and are there means in place to find out or to prevent it? does anyone really care?
we're all fuming at sharon and bush, protesting and climbing trees and rightly so, but what solidarity are we showing to abuse victims, where are the calls to incarcerate all those in the churchs chain of command. You want to see Sharon in jail for what hes doing, but do you want to see the pope and his bishops being marched to the 'joy.
Can we trust our judges, AG, politicians, Church leaders etc to attain any semblance of justice? If not, then we are abandoning the victims
