Repression Arrests Taranto, Reggio Calabria, Napoli Rebel South Network

Starting in the early hours of the morning, Italian police raided numerous houses, premises and universtities, arresting twenty activists from the 'Rebel South Network'.

The accusations all derive from article 270bis of the penal code, introduced under Mussolini's fascist regime. The cities hit include Taranto, Reggio Calabria, Cosenza, Vibo Valenzia and Naples. The charges consist of subversive association with the object of impeding the exercise of government and subverting the economic order, and concretely are related to the demonstration in Naples and Genoa in March and July or last year respectively. Eleven of the accused have been transported to the high security prison at Trani, two women to Latina and six are under house arrest. In addition there are 41 other individuals under investigation.

Francesco Caruso, the high profile leader of the Capmpagna Laboratory for Social Disobedience is among those arrested.

Solidarity actions, pickets and demonstrations are currently unfolding nationwide. Tomorrow there will be a demonstration in Rome.

Given the regional character of the arrests, it is to be expected that there will be others elsewhere in the country in the near future. The current concentration on the rebel South Network probably derives from the fact that the investigation into them began four months prios to Genoa, in the aftermath of the demonstrations against the OCSE. Earlier this summer a number of police were also arrested for violence perpetrated during the demonstration.

Italy: Statement from of Federation of Anarchist Communists on the raids

From: "fdca"

Statement from the F.d.C.A. (Federation of Anarchist Communists)

The State does not appreciate the increase in social struggles and the intensification in union struggles solidifying into one big opposition and struggle movement for social rights and liberties.

So now this... Immediately following the huge demonstration in Florence against the war, and coinciding (entirely coincidentally!) with the general strike of industrial workers, with one eye on the struggle of the workers in Termini Imerese [in Sicily, scene of the announced closure of a Fiat factory, - nmcn] and another eye on the growing anti-war, anti-militarist movement, and worried about the general social discontent in the South [of Italy], the repressive apparatus of the State hits out at around 40 activists in the social movement in (where else) southern Italy (although it is by now par for the course in Taranto!).

The charges of "subversive association" is intended to strike at the movement. It is an attempt to criminalize hundreds of thousands of activists and to intimidate and terrorize the growing sympathy for the struggle all over the country. The message is clear: you are all under observation, you are all subversive!

AGAINST STATE AND CAPITALIST REPRESSION!

SPREAD THE STRUGGLE FOR SOCIAL RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS!

RELEASE ALL THOSE IMPRISONED!

DROP ALL CHARGES!

NO CRIMINALIZATION OF THE WORKERS' STRUGGLES OR THE SOCIAL STRUGGLES!
