SWP organise IAWM demo to counter GG demo. Is this true?

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday November 18, 2002 12:28author by jimbo - swerp watch

Swerp watch was last night made aware of the following information.

"Aoife Ni Fheargaill and Richard Boyd-Barrett (both SWP members of the 4 people listed as the representatives of the IAWM) initiated the march in Dublin as a response to the information that the Grassroots Gathering had decided to call for a Shannon demonstration."

Read the newswire before you post your two-line articles, okay? Both the grassroots gathering and IAWM people have said they were unaware of the other's demo when they called their own (and the IAWM say they called theirs first).

Its hard to paint yourself as morally superior to the SWP when you're just trolling the newswire.

Your obviously just trying to stir up bad feeling so please just fuck off. If anything the decision to hold the IAWM demo was made some 36 hours before the GG one.

Get to both if you can, if you can only make one go to the one you reckon will have a bigger impact.

If you like to be criticised, get married.

It would help if the SWP/IAWM came out in support of the day of action ay Shannon. Many of the groups and individuals who are organising the day of action at Shannon airport have come out in support of the Dublin march. So far all we have got from the SWP/IAWM is the familiar nasty sectarianism. Come on lads, do the right thing.

I wonder if the decision for the IAWM march was backdated by the SWP members of the council. Any non-swp IAWM people that can confirm that this decision was taken BEFORE the GG call for a demo?

decision to hold Dublin march on December 7th was made at meeting the Thursday before the grassroots gathering - i'd been planning to go to belfast to try to get sponsorship from GG for the d7 demo - but unfortunately didn't make this - hopefully people will support both demos particularly since Dec 8th is the next Iraqi deadline - is the GG organising a bus from Dublin and if so how can we get tickets?

howya aoife,

details :

There will be a meeting this Wednesday evening to organise for the demonstration called by Grassroots Gathering for December 8th at Shannon airport. This meeting is open to all who wish to help out in organising the demonstration and we would be very happy for people from any political groups or unaligned individuals to attend. Among the items on the agenda we will be talking about:

* Organising buses to get to Shannon and selling tickets for them
* Agreeing poster designs and organising printing and putting them up
* Agreeing the text for a leaflet advertising the demonstration and distributing them.
* Organising a public meeting in the run-up to the demo.
* Discussing tactics for the day itself and liasing with the other groups from around the country.

The meeting will take place upstairs in the Kings Inn pub, on Bolton St, on Wednesday evening (November 20th) at 7pm. Unfortunately we don't really have any funds so the meeting venue is in a pub, however the upstairs is normally empty and should provide a passable venue for the meeting.
