Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor of Linguistics in Massachusets Institute of Technology and well-known critic of US foreign policy and US media structures, is to speak via video link from MIT to the Literary and Historical Society in UCD tomorrow, Tuesday 26th of November. All are welcome and the lecture will be relayed into two lecture theatres. (Was somewhat surprised not to see this on the newswire already, and if it has been posted already and I've missed it, then feel free to delete this post, IMC people).

It's somewhat ironic that the L&H in UCD are putting on the show. The UCD Socialist Workers Party used to portray the society as the Tory party of UCD and condem them as the main conservative and counter-revolutionary force in the college (Richard Boyd-B take a bow). UCD would have been a socialist republic/utopia if it weren't for those blasted debaters.
Are the SWSW parnoid or have the L&H changed their politics dramatically - I know where I'm placing my bets.
The L&H is not proven to be non-right-wing just because they've invited Chomsky to speak. Chomsky has a lot of cachet and prestige even among those that don't accept or understand his arguments. So, nothing is proven about whether or not the SWP's assessment of the L&H as being primarily right-wing is accurate.
What's the point of all these trivial and nit-picking attacks on the SWP?
There's plenty to dislike about the clear, stated and unambiguous politics of the SWP. Sniping at them about trivialities (and inaccurately at that) is a waste of time and distracts attention from their central failing: an acceptance of authoritarianism and a revision of the history that they use to bolster this position.
I assume it is a debate, so the politics of individuals in the society does not really enter into it.
Way back in time - well, 10 years ago - it was the C+E that were to the roight (not a spelling error!) of Genghis Khan and the L+H were pretty much ignored, having their 'debates' on Friday nights when everyone normal had gone home or was getting pissed.
The Law Soc then were the main debating society and were leftish, but this was more due to the guy who was auditor than anything else. Now I hear that the Law Soc are the most right wing society. It depends very much on the committee and who is prominent within it.
It is irrelevant what the SWSS think or do in UCD or anywhere else - keep an eye of FF instead.
is it eircom or ATM?
or is is it satelite based if so which satelite?
shall it be closed signal (scrambled suscriber only) or shall it be open?
shall it be recorded?
what tech support is MIT offering to facilitate this transatlantic happening?
shall there be a report on IMC ireland of Mr. ChomskyŽs words?
and if the channel is open, is there a equivalent notice on Boston indymedia?
I haven't a clue about the video link. Maybe it'll be like the oscars. :)
And yes, the L&H are an elitist bunch. Makes no sense to describe them as "right" or "left": they're simply smug. However, I'll be there.
It's at 7.30pm in Theatre L.
By the way the SWSS don't really exist in UCD anymore after most of their active members split off and set up the more right wing Socialist Alternative
i've started to suffer from mpd
the multiple personality disorder is terrible.
one day youŽll be the Pat everyone gots used to,
the next youŽll be another, and then maybe even another, and you may even start impersonating others or leaving little hints that you could impersonate others if you really wanted to and were able to keep the personality on track long enough to start the impersonation which might ina few days go seriously delusional and then where would you be Pat?
Pat where would you be?
