Dublin Bus rips off the public with huge fare increases

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday December 03, 2002 11:45author by Come In Late

Is Christmas the time of year to rip off the public? Last year they put everything up with the great Euro rip off

Nice to see Dublin bus putting our fares up by 23% etc instead of the 9 % they were allowed to, for the same lousy substandard service, and the same old dirty diesel spluttering busses.

apparently the 9% increase was across the board so some routes didn't get a hike at all, whereas others made up for it. on what basis was this distribution made?
this price hike is completely illogical, further discouraging people who would otherwise use public transport (albeit not very env. friendly, i agree) to go back to their cars. now, more than ever it's time to reclaim Dublin Bus! What about a Mass fare evasion? people bringing guitars and drums and taking up as many buses as we can - we could have a big ole sing song and eat sandwiches together!!! the view may not be magnificent but the results may be surprising. we must continue to challenge at every turn, to keep the momentum of unrest going. the budget's out tomorrow; every dog and his divil will be up in arms, bitching and moaning and then we'll all go back to our hum drum lives and do nothing? i don't think so! Bertie's non-existent Bowl cost us 52 million, public outrage! for a week or so; now we pick up the tab. what next?

Mass free (self-reduced) use of the public transport infrastructure is an amazing charachteristic of Italian Movements. They took a train to Prague from Italy in 2001. You need to go somewhere - ring Ilda and pre-arrange a free trip. To Limerick perhaps.

Good idea-the idea of a mass fare free invasion of Dublin city's buses-certainly something a bit different and something that even the corporate press is bound to pick up on. Just one thing :-) As I say keep the bus drivers on our side. Don't forget they're ordinary working class folk as well. Their families and friends are also affected by the fares hike. I suppose you could say I'm a bit biased as I know a few bus drivers personally myself.

it's a good idea. The thing is that the bus will just not go anywhere untill ye all get booted off. The other people on the bus may not be happy, or the people waiting for that bus.

Great idea but I dont think that is the most effective way of protesting against the fare hike.

While on the subject of Dublin Bus, has anyone noticed that the Bi-lingual policy of Dublin Bus seems to be slipping. The newer buses have not got equal prominance Irish and English language signs etc.

great ideas but will anything be done about it? The governments have been quietly hiking the costs for tv licences, transport esb etc and Business has been ripping us all off since the EURO rip off last new year, while pocketing their huge corporation tax cuts as well.

there will be no action on this, the Irish left is unlike the Greek one which sprang into action on this issue. The labour party have the same policies as the government basically, which is MARKET RULES. Fringe out of touch groups such as the swp etc are too abstract and removed from reality to even notice what the ordinary ripped punter is saying about price hikes etc.

The Irish 'left' is a joke. FF will probally be re elected in 4 years or so. Not because they are so popular, but just because the labour party, swp etc are so pathetic, so it will be by default in a way.
