JUST TO CLARIFY

THIS REFERS TO AN OPEN DETENTION CENTRE CALLED 'SHANGANAGH CASTLE' WHICH IS SITUATED NEAR SHANKILL, CO DUBLIN.

THE DEPT OF JUSTICE AND MINISTER MACDOWELL ARE ATTEMPTING TO SELL OFF/CLOSE DOWN THE CENTRE. IT IS ONE OF THE FEW PROGRESSIVE REHABILITATIVE AND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN OUR PENAL SYSTEM. IT IS ALSO AN 'OPEN' PRISON FOR 16-21 YEAR OLDS. WHATEVER ABOUT CLOSING ONE OF OUR DICKENSIAN CLOSED PRISONS !!

BOTH THE PRISON AND EDUCATION STAFF ARE AGAINST THE CLOSURE AND BELIEVE THAT SHANGANAGH SHOULD BE DEVELOPED AND EXPANDED. SUPPORT WOULD BE VERY WELCOME

just wanted to add my support to the cause. The closing of Shanganagh is an absolute inditement of the Government's attitude towards juvenile justice. Its such a shame that the lads left there were effectively resentenced because of Fianna Fail cutbacks.
