Protestors at illegal dump attacked

Gardaí were called to the site of an illegal dump on the borders of Galway and Roscommon this afternoon after an altercation between protesters and a local landowner.

The incident took place at Kilbegnet, near Creggs. An RTÉ cameraman was attacked by a man and his camera was taken from him and thrown into a 10ft sludge pit.

The incident took place on a public walkway, the Suck Valley Way, where locals say human sludge is being dumped illegally. Roscommon County Council has said that the lagoons are an illegal development. Gardaí have been taking statements from witnesses.
