On 14 Feb the UK Guardian's G2 insert had a series of previously unpublished Gulf War (1991) photos. Pretty intense stuff to look at and it is sad that it took this long for anyone to publish it.

I couldn't find those photos online, however. But I did find many references to and articles about McCullin....

What photographers do others on the imc-irl-photo mailing list take inspiration from?

'Photography is not just about photographs; it's about communication. It's not about you. It's not about art. You're there to record. Sometimes, all too rarely, what you record is acts of human decency, of kindness and compassion - I have seen men cradling dying comrades and weeping. But that's the only side of war you will see that is beautiful.'

'Those pictures did upset a number of people and their complaints were taken seriously. The paper's argument then was the same as the one advanced now: that attempts to sanitise war should be strongly resisted, and that any argument for going to war, if it was to prevail at all, should be strong enough to prevail against exposure to the reality.'

Five Questions with Photographer James Nachtwey

Is a good photojournalist now a good digital photojournalist?

'I can only speak for myself, but documentary photography and photojournalism are based on perception, not on technology. It doesn’t matter to me if my pictures are shot on film or digital. Photographs are a product of heart and mind and the ability to connect. But technology is absolutely essential as a delivery system, and in journalism the delivery is vital. From a strictly job-oriented, professional standpoint, it’s critical to be able to deliver on digital technology. The qualities that make a good journalist, however, have not been programmed.'
