Mary Kelly: those who put economics before human life are a disgrace.

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday February 22, 2003 21:14author by Al O' Hara

Answering a question today on Radio Free Eireann, New York, about the economic effects of her attack on the US war machine, housewife and mother of four, Mary Kelly, said that those who put economics before human life are a disgrace. She also answered critics of her action by saying that they needed to be educated about direct action. She exposed the Govt. lies and a sinister side of Irish life. She said it was unconstitutional to allow uniformed US military to use Shannon. She called for support for the Ploughshare 5, locked up and denied bail. Dan Berrigan has called Ms.Kelly's symbolic destruction of the US war machine an act of justice and compassion

Direct Action is a righteous, moral, just, and necessary way to resist the unconstitutional and immoral use of Shannon by the US military.

'She also answered critics of her action by saying that they needed to be educated about direct action.'

she is right about this, the public and media do need an education about the philosophy and tactics of NVCD. But who is doing it?

Who else but us in the movement should be doing this work? I don't think we are doing a good job of it.

On March 1st there are calls for Direct Action but I fear neither the protestors nor the public has a good idea of what is being promoted.

Is it Direct Action or Non-Violent Civil Disobedience or what?

If do not explain exactly what we mean, do not expect prople and the media to understand.

Details of what action is planned for March first will be published soon (within the next couple of days). Plans are also in hand to get a leaflet to everyone on every bus going to Shannon explaining what we want to do and why and to announce it at the start.

Preparation and planning is happening all around the country. I know there's a meeting in Dublin on Wednesday evening to prepare for saturday, including a short NVDA workshop. Maybe details of other meetings around ther country could be posted here?
