Report from Meath MayDay
Went Back to Crossakiel
The town of Crossakiel in co. Meath was the location for an unusual march / concert today. In memory of the guy who wrote the song the Red Flag, British Trade Unions along with some local people have erected a monumnet to him, Jim Connell. Today there was a MayDay march through this little village and a concert with Billy Bragg, De Jimba and Kila.
The march was grand, bigger than the Dublin march by all accounts and with banners from a range of different unions (and the SWP). Speakers were mainly British labour movement (Jack O'Connor from Siptu spoke). It was a funny thing to go to (got a ticket to Billy Bragg on Friday and he mentioned it) but it was good to see a village taken over for the day by people who fight against capitalism and sing and dance and celebrate a better time:
It well recalls the triumphs past,
It gives the hope of peace at last;
The banner bright, the symbol plain,
Of human right and human gain.
Oh yeah, Kila brought the pagan ravers - who danced in cowshit. (as most people did).
