5000 CANDLES FOR PEACE

There will be a massive candle-lit vigil in Galway's central pedestrianised area on Saturday, 8 March (International Women's Day), between 7 pm and 8 pm. Following a very succesful publicity campaign in the city, the organisers —GalwayAllianceAgainstWar— are confident that their target of 5000 participants will be surpassed.

GAAW is asking Galwegians to carry a candle as a way of declaring a personal and collective desire for peace. Many musicians will participate in what promises to be an awe-inspiring occasion. There has never before been, GAAW believes, such a large candle-lit vigil anywhere in Ireland.

This is one of a number of events being co-ordinated by GAAW on Saturday: in Spiddal, Catholics, Muslims and anti-war activists are jointly organising an Irish language service; in Loughrea, there will be anti-war awareness event.
