So if the US thinks we're assisting the war, how can giving them the use of Shannon be legal?
From RTE news:

(20:45) The Taoiseach has told the Dáil that he 'presumes' that Ireland is one of the 15 countries identified by the US administration as assisting its war on Iraq.

That's funny because last year he claimed the opposite and that we were still neutral.
How can this country be neutral and yet claim to be assisting the war?
Of course Ahern figures it's safe to say it now, since the heat of the moment and argument has gone out of it. And besides the government has managed to get across the message over the past year, that they dare not bite the hand that feeds them -aka US investment in Ireland and many of those benefiting directly from this are not willing and have signalled that they will not rock the boat.
If true, this is wonderful news. About time! At last Ireland is playing a part, however small, in the global battle for freedom. After the shame of World War 2, we can start to hold our heads high again. Thank God for a leader like Bertie Ahern. Unlike De Valera, there will be no expressions of condolences from Bertie when Bin Laden snuffs it, regardless of what the Left/Green crackpots want. Good on you Bertie!
