This action will undermine the chances of the workers in uniform in the marines and paras of taking strike action against the war. Strike action is the only form of direct action that can work.

The SP has decided that lobbying the pro-war leaders of the AFL-CIO is the only way forward and think that both direct action and leafleting of trade union delegates is premature and irresponsible at this time, at least until the majority of the US officer corps backs it.

Over 140 arrested in New York anti-war protests
Last updated: 27-03-03, 16:05

Police arrested more than 140 protesters who lay down in the middle of New York's 5th Avenue during this morning's rush hour as part of a "die-in" to protest the US-led war on Iraq.

About 400 anti-war activists converged near Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan, many of them lying on their backs near the intersection of 49th Street and 5th Avenue and others holding signs and chanting "No War, No Oil, No Profit".

The two-hour peaceful protest, which closed part of 5th Avenue and snarled city traffic, was the latest of several acts of civil disobedience and anti-war demonstrations in New York and other large US cities.

Since last week, similar demonstrations have closed downtown San Francisco streets with a total of more than 2,000 people arrested.

Massive didn't equate to 300-400 people staging a die in. Maybe I'm wrong?

what foolish people, trying to shut down the economy and cause disruption! They should just march to an empty building or 2 on a saturday? Or maybe they should have a 10 minute work stoppage instead of shutting a airport or multinational exploiters! These US anti war activists definitely need revolutionary parties like the swp, sf and the sp to show them how to do nothing.

One notices that one sees a post on here occasionally criticising the Israeli political influence in the US that was a major factor that combined with Bush/Blair Colonialism that drove the US to begin this AGRESSION and attack on Iraq - then the next day it is gone. It has been taken off because there are those editors here that secretly support the war one must conclude. The war snakes infiltrate everywhere.
