Women and children shot as they attempt to flee city
US soldiers killed 7 women and children who were attempting to flee Najaf. This was an implementation of the earlier publically stated policy of the US/K forces which announced an intention to shoot anyone that didn't stop at a check point. Contrast the reporting of this outrage with the simulated horror which greeted the uncomfirmed Pentagon-seeded stories about Iraqi troops firing upon civilians attempting to flee cities.

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7the deaths were very sad however, the car should have stopped - I'm sure it was very frightening for the troops, only the other day a bomber killed some of their fellow service men in the SAME city.
They had no option, it was self defense.
We are not in our own country and hardly have a right to kill people if they drive in their own country. Why is the American more importent than Iraq own people. What would an american do if this car was shot up say out side of St. Louis by Chinese troops. Would they have the right?
And I don't approve of the war! You must know that millions of Americans feel that our country has been hijacked by the madman, Bush.
I am ashamed of my country's actions.
How many of those murdered peoples' relatives will strap on explosives to go and find more Americans?
Looks like the Bush gang is prepared to sacrifice any amount of their troops! Anyway most of them are Latin American right-wingers on a green-card run so they won't be missed in the "skull and crossbones".
We are used to hearing about cars that don't stop at army checkpoints getting riddled here in Ireland. Usually it turns out to be teenagers. For years the Brits have justified killing Irish teenagers just as this US apologist has justified killing Iraqi citizens in their own country.
You need not think my US friend that the Iraqi people will comply with you illegal invasion. Never. Many will always refuse to stop or recoginse your authority. So shoot them! That's what you will have to do to hold any territory you steal. I know you are mad enough to follow that policy but fortunately it is a futile and mistaken route to a failed invasion....ask the Brits who tried it here.
Then you can watch out for every vehicle and civilian that comes near you. Go ask the Israelis how easy it is to hold territory under thosae circumstances.
would you not stop at a BA checkpoint in belfast?
A car full of terrified women and children find a vehicle with enough gas to take them clear of the hell their town has become. They have been bombarded with propaganda, and some truth, about the actions of the 'Yankee Invader'.
- Precision strikes on civillians in Bagdad
- the 'Yankee Invader' is here to take your home and women
The possibly hysterical women, who may not even be 100% sure how to drive this vehicle, approach a checkpoint manned by the 'Yankee Invaders' all of whom are armed to the teeth.
The women see young white soldiers screaming and waving at the vehicle in a language none of the vans occupants recognise.
the children and women in the van start screaming even more - the levels of hysteria in the car approach a fevered pitch.
Already spooked marines start firing at the car. Any car approaching a checkpoint at speed is deemed to be occupied by a suicide bomber in the minds of these troops.
The women now know that the troops mean to win these hearts and minds by burying them. The driver steps on the accelerator .... and every terrified soldier at the checkpoint opens fire.
Hours later a young officer manning the checkpoint describes events to his superior officer- "Well sir we calmly requested that the women halt their vehicle before firing a warning shot at said vehicle. We first fired at the tyres of the van, this was followed by a single shot at the engine block...."
Lies within lies. History is told by the winners. The first(?) of many My Lai's/ Bloody Sunday's to come in this war of 'liberation'.
