Song for Tonights Protest

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday May 09, 2002 16:03author by Joe Sheehan - Independant

This song was created by an anonymous songsmith who has requested that I put it on the site for tonight's protest

If you go down to the streets today, you’re in for a big surprise
If you go down to the streets today, you just won’t believe your eyes
The Samba Bands, the dancing crowd, the people happy, the music’s loud
And that’s the way the RTS have a picnic!

If you were down on Dame Street that day
You’d better be quick to run.
When batons flew on dame street that day, brutality had begun,
The numbers gone, there’s no more fun, our busted headsAnd that’s the way to ruin our friendly picnic

If you are in Templemore today, you better not close your mind.
It’s up to you to have your say the role should be defined,
To keep the peace enforce the laws, not batter people without just cause

WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONDUCT A PEACEFUL PICNIC!

A few words left out of RTS Picnic there. Here's the rest of it. Plus, an old tune rewritten for the occassion. (with apologies to Bagatelle!)

RTS PICNIC

If you go down to the streets today,
You’re in for a big surprise
If you go down to the streets today,
You just won’t believe your eyes
The Samba Bands, the dancing crowd,
The people happy, the music’s loud
And that’s the way the RTS have a picnic!

If you were down on Dame Street that day
You’d better be quick to run.
When batons flew on Dame street that day, brutality had begun,
Their numbers gone, there’s no more fun,
Our busted heads, we’re filled with dread
And that’s the way to ruin our friendly picnic

If you are in Templemore today,
You better not close your mind.
It’s up to you to have your say
The role should be well defined,
To keep the peace enforce the laws,
Not batter people without just cause
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONDUCT A PEACEFUL PICNIC!

(to the tune of the chorus from "Summer in Dublin" by Bagatelle)

That Beating In Dublin

I remember that beating in Dublin
And the batons as they hurt like hell
All the young people running down Dame Street.
The party had started so well.
We had singing, and dancing and samba
With people enjoying the sun.
And the critical mass showed us how to commute
No traffic, no hassle, just fun.
So we had people just chillin’ and dancin’
Enjoying the bank holiday
And a guy in a funky black cod piece
You could tell he had something to say

But the crowd control was agitated
They saw people who wouldn’t conform.
So the called it a left wing protest
Just hippies about to do harm.
So they jumped on some folks up on Dame Street
Beating heads with so little regard
The batons were used without caution
On people who’s heads ain’t so hard.
But thank God for the IMC cameras
And the footage that they did provide
We can call for a public enquiry
‘Cos the evidence can’t be denied.

Oh, when the guards, go wading in!
Oh, when the guards, go wading in!
just tell me please, where's your number?
Oh, when the guards, go wading in!

Anyone got a rap / hip-hop suggestion?
