Why the Open Wire has been suspended

The North Carolina Independent Media center will not tolerate posts on the Open Wire that include threats, racism, homophobia, classism, and sexism. Examples of unacceptable action on our website include but are not restricted to: hate speech, threatening comments of any type, and altering posted photographs.

Vigorous debate on the Open Wire is encouraged, so long as it stays on topic, is not reduced to personal attacks, name calling, and provides a feeling of open expression.

Due to several threatening posts on the Open Wire, we believe it has stopped being an good place for open expression. We have collectively decided to improve our website and in the interim suspend the Open Wire section of our site.

We regret having to take this step. We will reopen it as soon as we can.
Here are some suggestions for posting to e-mail lists or web forums.
DO NOT POST FLAME BAIT!
DO NOT RESPOND TO FLAME BAIT!

Flame Bait: Intentionally accusatory and harsh material that is written with the purpose of attacking people with the hopes of eliciting an angry response. (i.e. Bait)
Flames: Strongly worded, even violent writing in response to someone else's flame bait or unagreeable writing.
In the interim if you have news that follows the guidelines of our mission statement PLEASE send your stories to nc@indymedia.org.
We are actively searching for the best way to allow you to post and comment to the open wire while retaining a productive and focused atmosphere.
Thank you very much for your patience!

you have just described indymedia ireland. and let's be honest people, what is the real reason we come here? for independent news and analysis... or to read the trot-baiting, anarcho-hating, green-bashing, shinner-thrashing pearls of wisodm on this site?

seriously though, indy irl is in a pretty awful state. if only we could all work together to make IT work. mind you there are obviously people out there with an agenda to make it not work.

and i don't claim to be innocent of all crimes, like most users of the site, i've been guilty of 'flame-baiting' (interesting word) and outright attempted character assassination. mostly directed at our resident wannabe-mossad agent avi h.

also, any news on a search engine for the site?

i think hate-speech refers to racsim, as in hate-crimes.

never underestimate the power of hate. its a useful fuel.

The newswire was a great experiment that has failed.
The right wing geeks almost certainly post deliberately fascist comments on here to quote later as "evidence" of Indymedia's "anti-semitism" or whatever.
Worse still some genuine neo-nazis exploit it too. The newswire is guff that our opponents exploit to libel us.
If Indymedia collectives can't keep their newswires scrubbed they shoud disable them.
I know its closing down an opening for genuine activists but they can always go direct to the IMC collective in their area to announce bona fide events.
And every story should have a comments section, like any other news site.
I hate to open this page and see some bizarre fascist vaporing, it makes it hard to take Indymedia seriously sometimes, and I support the idea. If someone new to the site stopped by what impression would they get?

Dermot.
