Community street protest on Dominic St, Dublin 1, just up from the ILAC centre, Dublin 1 on Sat, May 31 from 9am to 6.

This is the 2nd week of the protest & we are calling on the public & indymedia regulars to come & support us this Saturday in our aim to reclaim our street for our children who have no other play areas. Already 11 childrem have been badly injured on the road by traffic this year. Please support our attempt to reclaim public space in the city centre for the residents of our own community.

If we can convince Dublin City Council to heed to our demands, we could be a model of street action for local communities right across Dublin.

Hi,
The Critical Mass bike ride that happens on the last friday of the month (tomorrow) will pass through Dominic St. during its usual route of the city & will also finish up on Dominic St. as a show of solidarity with the residents and their campaign.

Assemble at 6pm the Garden of Rememberance, all welcome bring bells, whistles & your mates to celebrate all things bike & show car drivers that there is an alternative.

I was just up there at about 6:30 on thursday evening 29th, there were again to groups of about 7-8 or slowly walking up the road on either side holding banners, slowing down the traffic.

Firstly their wish list is
1.traffic lights at the bottom of the street (parnell street end)
2.a pedistrian crossing midway down the street
3.speed bumps (with cyclist friendly gaps)
4. chicanes
5. the non-resident pay and display parking off the road.

They hope this will slow drivers down to protect against accidents and also try and deter drivers from coming down that road entirely and reducing the traffic volume.

Although seem residents were very suspect of rts, everyone i spoke to welcomed everyone to support them and otherstood the mistruths about rts.

they plan to protest thurs/fri/sat this week slowly the traffic but not blocking (unles the police do it anyway) and then review the protest newxt week

I spoke to a number of people particularily eddie and martina who breifly spoke with the gards who in this case or very supportive of their wishes, but also have duty to keep traffic moving in the city, and keep protestors and drivers safe.

I tried to find out what the council have said about it, there seem not to have said anything definite but to draw up a plan of the street and what they want on it and summit it and they would have a look at it.
Although eddie did say that the council 2-3 yrs ago promised a revamped play and parking area behind their flats costing 650,000punts and three weeks ago were told there wasn't any money for it

they have after two-ish weeks of protest started to get some press coverage, two residents spoke on newstalk 106 thursday morning and some of the papers have started coming down to the street
but as ever get the best coverage on your very own indymedia

(ps i rather not have it entitled reclaim the streets all the time ,well there two angles
either reclaim the streets idea, which is nobodies and everybodies can be adapted by anyone, or it will look like rts are trying to take it over or claim responsibility which would be terrible
