Approx 20 Nigerians Picked Up For Deportation in Blanch. Tanya Dube In Mountjoy. Protest Planned.

'What happened to compassionate leave to stay?' sez Wag 'Oh Yeah. McDowell. That's what happened'

UPDATE 11.25 PM 5 JUL:
Deportation plane leaving at 1 am
******** 21 years old - 4 months pregnant by Irish Guy - is the daughter of a woman who has been allowed leave to remain here on humanitarian grounds. She is being deported on the plane. She was allowed a single phonecall to her mother tonight by the Gardai. No room at the inn in Ireland anymore. There are several pregnant women of different nationalities locked up in Mountjoy Women's prison this eveining. Their immediate fate is unclear at the time of writing.
**************************************************

INDYMEDIA.IE 4 JUL:
RAR (Residents Against Racism) have heard from various asylum seekers whom they are in contact with that Gardai were seen in and out of pubs and homes in Blanchardstown picking up approximately 20 Nigerian asylum seekers last night. Some women were also picked up last week in Galway. The men are now in Cloverhill Prison and the women (two at least) are in Mountjoy Women's Prison.

One of the women in Mountjoy is Tanya Dube who was resident for the last 4 years in Galway. This is the same Tanya Dube who after being locked up in the Women's prison in Mountjoy in July 2002 while heavily pregnant, was brought to hospital with a 'guard' of two ban gardai and two female prison officers. She was released after her recovery without any money or train or bus ticket at the time and, after returning to Galway with money provided out of the pocket of a RAR member, was later subsequently brought to Crumlin Hospital with her newborn and gravely ill baby who died after two days.

She is now separated from her husband who has already been deported and her teenage son who is still in Galway.

The RAR activist I spoke to believes a mass deportation to Nigeria is imminent. RAR are thus calling for an EMERGENCY protest at the GNIB Burgh Quay on Tuesday 5th July at 1.30pm.

Whatever happened to compassionate grounds to remain? This woman is the mother of an Irish Citizen who is dead.

The other woman that RAR knows about in Mountjoy is Olubukola Adekunle. She has been living in Dublin for four years and is subject to sudden deportation because she missed a "signing on day" in Burgh Quay a couple of weeks ago because she was at the doctors. The doctor neglected to fax the GNIB (as he is supposed to) that she was attending the doctor and thus she is now in jail awaiting immediate deportation for the crime of visiting a doctor.

Phoning/faxing these people and letting them know what we think of them and their racist actions might be the only thing the rest of us outside Dublin can do while ye are at the protest.

I recommend the Permafax(tm) devised by those pesky Pat Finucane Centre People;

send a message on a loop through a fax machine by passing it through and then sellotaping the end of the paper back to the beginning. Jams the f*ckers up for hours!

Flaming their emails with heavy attachments is another option.

I tried for hours -since late last night until lunchtime today- to phone the GNIB (at 01-6669100) but their phone has been "engaged" continuously.
The Dept Of Justice -after eventually getting through to an operator- say they have nothing to do with anything, and refused to put me on to anyone who might know anything. Other than the GNIB, who remain engaged.
Total whitewash.

(sounds bizarre doesn't it?) the G5 are the interior and justice ministries of the 5 biggest EU states.
UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. (they are all in the G8 with the exception of Spain, one wonders why Italy is in the G8 one really does).

They have agreed a common expulsion policy on migrants. This means an extension of the accords already signed between Libya and Italy, which amongst other things allowed for EU funds to be directed to building internment or "re-entry" camps in Libya and Tunisia and others planned for the future.

(this will get its own article soon, as it dovetails neatly with the African Union meeting in Libya which has discussed the same issues "re-entry" yesterday.and builds on the information on internment camps from the Euro day of protest against same)

Immigrants may have to pay deposit on arrival
http://www.unison.ie/irish_independent/stories.php3?ca=9&si=1427952&issue_id=12703
Migrant workers coming to Ireland may have to provide a bond or deposit to prove to immigration authorities that they will be able to support themselves or their families.

Financial guarantees are a feature of the immigration systems of many countries and the Department of Justice has said that "international experience" should be taken into account here.

I was down at GNIB today and there is definitly going to be a deportation tonight. Among the people that had to sign on today was a girl who is four months pregnant and the father of the child is Irish, obviously terrified she ran towards the toilets when the guards were going to take her upstairs a couple of RAR members followed her and about five officers followed us into the toilet, it was quite intimidating and they were very hostile in paticular one women officer, one officer persuaded her to go into an empty toilet and she was then brought upstairs with the officers telling us she may be brought down later, the latest we have heard from her mother is she is being brought home for her belongings then will be brought to Dublin airport for deportation. There are Five women in Mount Joy two are over five months pregant and one is in the early stages of pregnancy some of there husbands are in Clover Hill. This morning Clover Hill confirmed that there is Nigerian men in custody and that they have been taken there all through last week and over the weekend.

After failing to get through to the Dept of Justice, or the GNIB, I rang around newspapers+radio stations, giving whatever info I had, and an RAR number to contact. Most of them had no idea what was going on, though appeared interested (yeah right) well we'll see.
Those contacted included:
Irish Mirror, An Phoblacht, Irish Independent group, Star, Sunday World, Today FM, and the RTE talkshows.

Nigerian asylum seekers deported

MORE than 40 failed asylum seekers were deported back to Nigeria late last night on a chartered jet.

The group was accompanied by detectives from the Garda National Immigration Bureau on the flight from Dublin to Lagos.

Most of the Nigerians had been arrested in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Athlone in the past few days but others turned up at the bureau in response to the deportation orders which had been served after they had exhausted the appeals process.

However, Nigerians who were due to be deported as a result of the new fast-track process which guarantees their asylum claims will be heard, and rejection decisions appealed within a maximum of six weeks, failed to appear.

All of them had "gone missing" and immigration officials believe they have returned to Britain. One senior official said last night: "The numbers who have disappeared indicate a high level of bogus claims." Deportation figures are set to rise significantly this year with greater use of chartered jets.

A protest was held by the Residents Against Racism group outside the bureau offices.

(Whatever happened to compassionate grounds to remain? This woman is the mother of an Irish Citizen who is dead.)

A lot of people have personal experience of such grevious loss.

This is an unusually cruel trade on a deeply private tragedy.

I'll decline comment on the rest as similar gratuitous exploitation of individuals for vain publicity disgusts me.

You don't get offended by somebody who has suffered a "deeply private tragedy" being deported against their will. You do get offended by somebody daring to mention it. Can you give any reason why this doesn't make you an appalling hypocrite? Your words are as valuable as those of a politician, nothing genuine just a load of squirming.

author by PseudoNompublication date Thu Jul 07, 2005 03:56author address author phone Report this post to the editors

You can "will" what you want when deportation notices are served.

Most people do not "will" the death of their child.

Speaking (as I politely inferred) from personal experience.

author by Badmanpublication date Thu Jul 07, 2005 04:10author address author phone Report this post to the editors

That was a little journey into meta-physics with a nice little diversion into an implied irrelevant and unverifiable personal experience. Now could you answer the question? How can you fail to be offended by the forced deportation of the victim of a tragedy and simultaneously be offended at somebody mentioning it, without being a hypocrite?

. . . resembles nothing more than that disgusting and unfit for office pd woman who on the VBrowne radio show implied repeatedly that the death of Brian Rossiter after a night in Garda Custody was the fault of his father.

What an administration - blaming the victims fulltime.

From a victimologists perspective, this might make sense, even if it wildly off topic.
