A Cliftonville man is taking legal action against the PSNI after he was set upon and severely beaten at the weekend.

Sean McAllister from Clifton Park had been watching the Ireland match on Sunday when he became ill. He went to the Mater hospital, where he was examined and released. While walking out onto the Crumlin Road, he was set upon by the PSNI/RUC, who beat him with batons.

He received five stitches to his head and bruising to his body. The attack comes a month after Paud Devenney was left fighting for his life after the PSNI batoned him to the ground in the Short Strand.

Sinn Féin Councillor Eoin Ó Broin said McAllister had been attacked "because he was wearing Irish colours".
