Statement from Rossport 5 after High Court today

category mayo | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Monday July 25, 2005 13:58author by M. Ní Sheighin Report this post to the editors

Seo thíos an ráiteas a d'eisigh Cúigear Ros Dumhach inniu in éis na hArd-Chúirte, agus a léigh an Dr Mark Garavan amach ar a son.

"The freedom the Rossport 5 require is the freedom and obligation all citizens have, the freedom to use all peaceful means to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours.

We are in prison because we intend to protect our lives, our families and our neighbours from potential disaster. We cannot agree to a proposal that proposes to ban us from continuing to protect our lives by opposing the Shell works.

In light of recent developments, Shell's word is hardly legal tender."

the judge is acting in a way that limits damage to his own ego. This seems to be more important than upholding the law and allowing citizens their rights.

The judge wont admit that he was wrong to send the men to jail and that Shell lied to him when they said that they have all the planning for the work they have done.

It is now public knowledge that Shell lied to the judge in order to get the 5 men put away.

Shell have indeed being carrying on construction work on the pipeline and council for Brid McGarry and Brendan Philbin pointed out to the judge that Shell said the pipeline came in half kilometre lengths and no construction had was done by them in Rossport.

This is a blatent lie by Shell and their people should have been sent to jail today if there is any such thing as justice in this land.

The judgge is being totally bias towards Shell and even in the face of concrete evident is doing nothing to punish Shell for lying in his court, like a broken record he just kept on repeating that the men must purge their contempt

Dlúthpháirtíocht leis an chúigear.

Má d'inis Shell bréaga sa chúirt, nach coir é seo? Nach féidir do dhuine éigin é seo a chur ar shúile an Ard Aighne nó Stiúirtheoir na nIomchúisimh Phoiblí?

It should be very clear to people that Ireland is being sold off to the highest bidder.
They changed the planning regulations to make IKEA happy, turned Shannon into a part of the US war supply chain.
What little independence we have left was negotiated away during discussions on the EUROPEAN CONSTITUTION.
Surrendering our natural resources is just part of the global plan.
The only defence we have against the power establishment is people power.
It was good to see so many out to protest on Saturday.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that they're selling Ireland to the highest bidder... that would assume that there was some sort of fair call for tenders, process of review, etc... It's worse than that actually...

25 July, 2005

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Marine and Natural Resources Martin Ferris TD has slated today's court decision, to keep the five men from Rossport, Co. Mayo in jail. Deputy Ferris said the decision is "totally unacceptable."

Speaking today, he said:

"The travesty of injustice continues. Despite the fact the Minister has indicated that the pipeline being built by Shell & Statoil in Mayo did not have the required permission the judge has sent the five men back to jail today. The judge even refused to listen to the case put before him. This is an absolute disgrace. These five men are in jail for simply protecting their community against a hazardous pipeline. These men should never have been in jail in the first place and should be released immediately.

"The behaviour of the judge today raises serious questions about the men's incarceration. Because of his action's they could now remain in jail until October, which is totally unacceptable.

Allowing IKEA to set up a store in Dublin hardly constitutes selling the country to the highest bidder. IKEA have stores in most European countries and in the USA. So, presumably you think the Governments there have also sold their countries to the highest bidders. Had the Government not allowed IKEA to set up in Dublin, they'd have set up in Newry, with a consequent loss of millions of euros in tax revenue and hundreds of jobs on this side of the border. Is that what you want? Please tell us. Truly the idiocy of socialists knows no bounds.

The President of the Irish High Court, 'Justice' Joe Finnegan, is a corrupt brit-wigged disgrace to the country. It is he who has outrageously abused his authority, natural justice and the Irish Constitution to imprison 5 innocent men. The above poster is right to say that this cynical reptile now seeks only to salvage his own image out of this mess. But that should never be allowed to happen. He must be punished for his crime. Perhaps a tip to McDowell could see a swoop on the Fourcourts to deport Joe Finnegan. Nigeria is nice at this time of year I think?
