A Call For Solidarity and Support by Miscarrage Of Justice Prisoner - John Brady

John Brady in a statement from Maghaberry Goal congratulated the campaign organisers on the successful launch of the campaign to secure his immediate release. He condemned the sentence review board as a front for a continuing campaign of selective internment against Republicans and drew attention to the worsening conditions within captivity.

“I would like to thank the campaign organisers for the support which they have shown to my family and me since my unexpected incarceration. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the IRSM who have provided their unconditional support and the much needed resources in which to conduct this campaign on my behalf. It gives one a sense of comfort too know that there is so much interest and support on the outside and that I still have a voice through the bars of this nightmare. I have no hidden agenda, I have been a Republican all my life and at one stage myself my father and brother where all incarcerated within different Goals throughout the country in pursuit of our political beliefs. This does not give reason in 2005 to manufacture evidence against me to secure a further term of imprisonment. The case against me is flawed and I have no dought that the evidence has been planted or manufactured. This I am sure will become clear during my show trial. My long Republican credentials are being used as the only justification for my imprisonment. If this is the only reason for my incarceration the whole country should be interned.”

The following statement was made by the sentence review board in relation to my case.

“On the basis of the evidence put before them in the open part of the hearing the panel was not satisfied that Mr Brady had breached the conditions that he does not support a specified organisation, that he does not become concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism connected with the affairs of Northern Ireland or he does not become a danger to the public. Nor did the panel think, on the basis of the evidence presented in the open part of the hearing that Mr Brady is likely, if released, to breach the terms of his licence.”

The board was then taken to a closed secision on their return they stated that they could not discuss what was said in the closed session which was heard by the board and the RUC in the absence of my legal team. They retracted their previous comments to follow up that they where satisfied that I have broken the terms of my licence and the early release. There has been no explanation provided for this u-turn and in the absence of any other credible explanation, my campaign organisers are right to suggest that this is nothing more than a continued campaign of selective internment.

The situation in Maghaberry jail continues to deterate with attempts made to not only criminalises Republican prisoners but their families and loved ones. The recent announcement that they intend to increase the use of what they term the passive drugs dog is nothing more than an attempt to criminalise Republicans and their visitors. Visitors to the jail now have to be fingerprinted and photographed upon entry, they pass through three checkpoints, at which they are asked to verify their finger prints which throw up their image on a computer, and this is after they have been searched. On arrival at the main prison they are subjected to the passive drugs dog. If the dog sits down beside one of the visiting party the whole party is refused an open visit. If you ask for the RUC to be called to detect drugs on your person the alarm is hit and the riot squad is summonsed to eject you from the prison. The escalation of this dog means that prisoners returning from a court or visit is subjected to the same exercise if the dog sits down beside them regardless of wheater drugs have been detected or not the individual spends three days on the boards. This is being seen by prisoners as a further attempt to break their spirit and morale, it has failed in the past and is doomed to failure in the future. The spirit comradeship and determination of Republican Prisoners will out weigh any attempts to break their morale

I call on all those who are genuine in their support for my release to provide the campaign organisers and my family what ever support and assistance that they may require in highlighting my case. This campaign is being fought not on a political front but a humanitarian one. Although my case and the circumstances surrounding are purely political as is my continued incarceration. The campaign organisers will make every effort to present the facts of the case in a relevant and justified manner.
