The Privatisation of Everything Under the Sun: audio.

recording of Kenbrew McLoed at TCD, Fri Jan 13th.

The public domain is shrinking: it is being diminished in almost every sphere; education and literature, medicine, life (including human genetic material), music and science. Needless to say, this privatisation is beeing carried out at the expense of our freedom to avail of our common heritage; for no-one is trully original. Isaac Newton said "If I see further than other men, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants".

Likely as not, this statement of Newton's freely given, will be forbidden from use without royalty of some description in the near future.

Our own state broadcaster is at it; selling things back to us that are already ours, but that's for another day.

Listen to Kenbrew's less parochial perspective; though cords will be struck.

Kenbrew is one of the most articulate people I have heard to date, explaining the social cost of mass privatization, be it in scientific research or in music. He has a very interesting mind.

The discussion took place in a pub on Dame Street on Friday January 13th, shortly after Kenbrew had conducted a public seminar on The Privatisation of Everything Under the Sun for the Department of Sociology at Trinity College Dublin.

Dr. McLoed had to leave the field of Sociology for Communications in the US, because Sociology Departments there are not open to radical discourse. Even European Sociologists like Stuart Hall are off the disciplinary menua of US Sociology. In Contrast, Communications Studies in the US are inter-disciplinary and very open to debate of integrity
