40 YEAR SPAN TO ANTI BRITISH PROTEST

The anniversary of the escape 40 years ago this week of
Richard Behal from Limerick prison co-incides with the
case of a Cork man imprisoned for taking action against
another war ship, the chairman of the Limerick Republican
Information Service said today.

Des Long from Corbally said that 40 years ago Richard Behal
had escaped from Limerick prison after being committed for
allegedly shooting at a British warship visiting Irish waters.

“Earlier this week the case of Terence O’Brien from Blackpool in
Cork heard that he also allegedly was prepared to take action
against the presence of a British warship in the port and he was
sentenced to a savage three years,” said Mr. Long.

“The fact that both these incidents are separated by forty
years indicates that there is still opposition to the British
presence in Ireland. It is the British presence that is the cause
root of the conflict in Ireland and this is becoming clearer with
every passing day.

“At a time when the leadership of the Provisionals is
being shown to have been fully infiltrated and directed
by the security services of the British Crown it is essential
for the Irish people to reflect on how the traditional
principles and aspirations of Irish Republicanism have
been subverted and undermined.

“Men like Richard Behal and Terence O’Brien understand that
the British presence is still an unresolved issue and they are
prepared to sacrifice their freedom to take a stand against it.”
