Portlaoise Gets Ready To "Make Poetry History"
On Tuesday, May 2nd, at 8:30 pm, Kavanagh's pub in Portlaoise will hold what is believed to be the town's first night of a live performance of poetry; what makes this night unique is that all poems being performed are unpublished and have not been read to an audience before.
By doing this, the poets in question intend to be making history regarding poetry in the Portlaoise area – not making history of poetry, as the title of the night might suggest.
Reading on the night will be Mark Conroy – an English teacher at CBS Tower Hill, David Walshe – a Leaving Cert. student at CBS Tower Hill, and Dr Derek Coyle – a lecturer in English Literature and Irish Studies at St Patrick's college in Carlow.
Topics that will be covered by the poets will include the war on terror, the idea and purpose of education, issues of identity, and questions of authority, amongst others.
The night is open to all members of the public (and private); and of course, Admission is FREE.
