Exhibition Launch & Lecture - A Tribute to the Spanish Republic and the International Brigade.
An exhibition by Belfast artist Gerry Gleason
"The Linen Hall Library is proud to announce a landmark exhibition of original works by Gerry Gleason. These works are inspired by the sacrifices made by the many men and women, artists and workers who travelled to Spain to defend the republic against the fascist insurrection. The exhibition is divided into four sections; poets and writers, combatants, the effects on the Spanish population and finally the enduring symbolism of the conflict. The exhibit is part of the ongoing effort to have the sacrifices of the Belfast-based brigadistas memorialised in the city, a campaign led by the International Brigade Commemorative Committee."
The launch will be followed in the Performance Area at 7.30pm by:
¡No Pasarán! - The Spanish Civil War, Seventy Years On
A lecture by Dr Danny Kowalsky, Lecturer in European History, Queen’s University Belfast
This fascinating lecture will focus on the continuing influence of the war on the present day. The talk will look back on the history and memory of the Spanish Civil War – an epic tale of excitement, heartbreak, tragedy and defeat; at once the best known of modern internecine conflicts, and the most enigmatic.
