Colin Scallan Limited Edition Cd Giveaway
Bodkin's, Bolton St. June 17th
Colin Scallan has always been the dark horse of the Dublin music scene.
Since writing his first song, aged 15, his music has taken him onto countless stages, from the Olympia to the RDS, sharing bills with the likes of Van Morrison, Mary Black, Paddy Casey, Damien Dempsey and Mundy, and through many cities across the world.
myspace.com/colinscallanmusic Whether it’s a music lover just wanting a song they love to sing along to, or a fellow musician secretly filing away chord shapes to be tried out at home later, Colin’s influence has been felt by many, far and wide, his instinct for cutting through the fog has an appeal that transcends age, nationality or background.
Each song in his set has it’s own perfectly formed character full of insight and humour, and every individual work has a standalone quality which explains Colin’s resistance to categorisation.
His upcoming show in Bodkin's is intended to achieve a number of objectives:
Firstly as a precursor to Colin's upcoming US tour which sees him performing sets in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, Detroit, Syracuse and Albany. In Chicago, Colin will meet up with two time Grammy award-winning producer Jim Tullio (Mavis Staples, John Prine, Steve Goodman). Colin says: "I grew up listening to many of the great artists Jim has worked with in the past, including Jon Martyn, Rick Danko & Levon Helm (The Band), Richie Havens and Arlo Guthrie. When we met through a music developer's website I sat up and took notice when he offered advice on my current mixes. Quality and experience like that speaks for itself.”
“Also in the 'grapevine' are talks with a Detroit record label who have shown great interest in releasing my material in the US. They've shown major support and enthusiasm since becoming aware of my tunes - including one of my most popular songs - Build me a Woman. I'm looking forward to hearing the ideas they’ll be bringing to the table. As a lifelong Motown fan, the Motor City has extra appeal to me which all adds to the feeling that this could be a really good move”
Secondly the Bodkin's show will be an opportunity for lots of people who've been waiting for a Colin Scallan CD for so long finally to get one.
"I'm doing this one time offer of a free limited edition CD of previously recorded unreleased material.
So many people have been at me for ages to get a disk of this stuff to them. The few copies that are out there are constantly being ’borrowed’ for extended periods so that prompted me to get this compilation sorted, featuring lots of familiar songs and arrangements that have been around for a while. In the words of one friend it's a clear-out-the-past-and-make-way-for-the-rest collection. I'm only doing 100 copies of the disk and then that's it! Quite a few have been accounted for already but there'll still be some available on June 17th for the show"
Colin's band on the night is a tantalising prospect too, with long-time allies Mick Morris (Nanook, The West Seventies) lending his bass and emotive backing vocals, and Dave Keegan (The Rotators, Bagatelle) on drums, the precocious trio will be joined by the exceptional talents of Will Dowling on sax and Oregon born Wiley Wynne on keys . Watch out for special guests on stage too, anything could happen in the next hour and a half!
So Saturday June 17th in Bodkin’s, Bolton Street is on course to be a great show, that sees this former dark horse bringing it all back home before whisking it across the Atlantic, where he intends, in the words of one of his best known songs Daisy Chains, “To set the wheels of fortune on the move”
With support acts being finalised as we speak this is set to be a night to remember.
