Saturday 6th July saw a march in protest of the sacking of 24 airport security workers from Belfast International Airport in County Antrim Northern Ireland.
The workers were striking, with the support of their union the TGWU, against low pay ( currently £4.75 per hour with no sick pay or overtime rates ) and poor conditions. Within 2 days of the start of the industrial action the union withdrew its support and ICTS (the employers) sacked the workers, two of whom were shopstewards.
A protest march was organised which took its course along the Ballyrobin Road towards the Airport perimeter. Around 100 people attended the march and the police prescence was low key. One of the sacked shopstewards ( Gordon Macneill )said that he will fight the sacking decision and that the TGWU were now fully behind the sacked workers ( no reasons were given as to the repudiation of the industrial action by TGWU earlier in the protest though ). Two local TV camera crews were there but no stills media were apparent.
