The establishment has started the Nice referendum. Every day there is a statement from some worthy telling us how the EU will collapse unless we vote for a new Nice Treaty. Every commentator from militant anti-feminist John Waters to the liberal Fintan O Toole are demanding a Yes vote.
All this means that the No side needs to start organising.
But unfortunately it has gotten off to a bad start when Anthony Coughlan ('I am not and never have been a communist') stated that one of the main reasonsfor voting No was to keep out Eastern European from coming here.
Disgracefully Coughlan criticised this racist government for not being hard
enough on immigration by not insisting that Ireland got a seven year de-rogation from letting migrants in here.
All of this plays into the hands of people like Fintan O Toole and the ICTU who want to present the Nice Treaty as a piece of progressive
legislation.
This makes it all the more urgent that there is a distinct, anti capitalist independent campaign to oppose Nice on the basis that it militarises
Europe; that it promotes neo-liberalism and that it cuts back on democratic participation.
