What is so special about open-radio.nl?

Since you know indymedia you will certainly understand the new platform quickly, because it works similar, except specifically for audio material. It has been started in the Netherlands and currently has members in the Netherlands and in Germany but we also accept content in English.

Open-radio.nl allows radioactivists, audio artists and basically everyone interested to upload their shows, newsflashes and jingles to share with the world. All content is under a creative commons license and times without content are filled up with creative commons/copyleft music, so that we provide a 24-hour stream.

The uploader chooses her/himself when the show should be played. Our hope is to make non-commercial radio heard more widely. Rebroadcasting archive material is welcome, if the content has no commercial copyright. You can also use open-radio.nl as an archive and download shows to rebroadcast or, upon request, take over the whole stream for a specific action or live event. We usually only allow content in languages that we can moderate, so at the moment we allow Dutch, English and German. Exceptions are being made for French and Italian if we have the capacities. The moderation group is open for new members. Discrimination or fanatically religious content won´t be accepted in any language.

How can you get involved?

There are various ways.
First of all, you can just listen.
If you are involved in radio making already, you can upload shows that you make if you
think they are of international interest.
You can give us feedback and wishlists for improvements.
You can upload copyleft music.
You can become a member of the moderation group.
You can join the hacking/tech team.
You can learn how to make radioshows and jingles (we use audacity, an open-source software tool for audio editing: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)
You can give workshops on making radio!
You can rebroadcast the stream.
You can spread the news.
You can donate us money (e.g for the regular hosting costs).

You can't overlook that in Barcelona where Dunk lives there are 2 fulltime FM activist radios, Contrabanda 91.4FM (where iosaf did his war series) Bronka 105.4FM, one occupied TV channel (okupem les ones) and 3 streaming radio projects. In addition there are 4 groups working on hours on migrant and minority community programs for a total potential listenership of 5.2 million people in Barcelona and the two cities which are either side of it. Only one radio project has been closed in the last four years, RadioPak which broadcast in Urdu and Punjabi. In contrast Contrabanda had a commercial pirate which broadcast on its signal closed by the state. So - it's a culture not tech. It's the size of the relative population (the Barcelonan area has more people than live on the island of Ireland in the same size as two thirds of Dublin's sprawl) and its the readiness of people to listen to decent programming in multiple langauges when its mixed with good music (in the case of radio) or good documentaries (in the case of the TV station).

Dunk,

I don't think the technology being available to people is the issue here or the reason why people may not listen to as much activist radio as you/me/we might like.

I think it is an issue of effort/time; for example, I don't listen to, say, democracynow.org every day although I'd like to because of the effort (which I know is not much) to download it and put it on my mp3 player or a CD for the car or whatever. However, I do like to let it play streaming as I am doing other stuff on the internet, and this, I believe, is where something like radio.indymedia.ie would benefit if it was available in a streaming format as well as a downloadable format.

Perhaps, even, the editors might consider, in the meantime, making whatever audio is on the indymedia.ie servers available as a "Random Stream" link which might introduce more people to radio as an activist medium.

is downloading and listening still such a big hassle, most computers i get to, social centres, libraries, schools, unis, call shops are adaquate to listen this way. im not sure thats not the hassle, perhaps people think it is when, mostly for average sized files, its not....

if the "getting the stuff out to an audience of ZERO" thing is the problem, well then, we can still plough on and offer our audio output to the many many online and terrestrial networks that are out there. its great when out of the blue a radio collective in another country contacts you to say they put your audio out.... if only more of our "activist" community would tune in and from that offer more and more and mroe

re streaming, event ill be at tonight will be streamed, probably in a mix of spanish / english, depending on who is talking... we hope to have both outputs recorded (the audience have those headphones to listen in what tongue they wish) and later uploaded.. already posted on imc.ie here:

Perhaps many people don't listen to audio on indymedia.ie because it has to be downloaded and then listened to.

If an endeavour such as what is being proposed above were to come about, it would be a good idea to have a link on the front page (each page really) perhaps along the top links on the left of "Streaming Audio" so that readers could leave it playing while they are reading indymedia.ie or any other site. A downloadable format could also be linked to, as well as a podcast.

Good to see a bit of discussion here and a wish to do something with IMC-IE radio, past and present. Id have to agree with redjade´s concerns about who listens, as someone who has grabbed and stuck online a good few hours of audio, i also get the idea that no-one listens. But, thats not to say that things wont change, or indeed arent presently changing. I feel that on the whole, the activist community does not fully utilize the tool (weapon for some) that is radio.

Diffusion of ideas in the Irish context
Part of many peoples struggle is getting word out there, trying to let people find out about other ideas, stories, truths. Sometimes you might be able to pull down a friend to a talk or something, but perhaps a subtler easier thing might be offer a link to an audio about said issue, for many who arent political / "activist", i feel personally, they suffer from a peer pressure / fear to face this world openly as things like this are still easily and usually mocked in "modern" ireland, i feel this is true in both urban dublin and rural village worlds, of which i can say i know both quite well.
But, what if with that little weblink, your mate gets sent, is accessed, file downloaded to i-pod, played straight off the computer....this world of tek is ever changing and becoming easier as time goes on...
and once something does hit a critical desire level, it does fly everywhere through the web waves... the point is what are we talking about...

Look at success at things like you-tube to see how used things can become, quickly...

I remember the passion and the hours put in by people at the IMC-radio centre at the edinburgh social centre during G8-2005, why, because it mattered to get the word out, but moreso there were people connected back at their homes where audio / radio was the tool of change. I speak more here of some of the African audio heads (not white euro heads who'd gone there, or participated on a global project with black locals as we partly did for WSF 2007), anyway, these african people put a show out, that went out live on some african radio networks, while others would record it to later physically travel to many many nodes through out many countries to get word out, we heard stories that in some places content was transcribed, faxed or posted, picked up and read out on local radio....
they were working with the amarc network, who had managed to get some of them to scotland during the "make poverty history" and so much more

Anyway, my point is that i think we could explore how to do more, and then do it.... its easy for us to complain but better to get up and do it, or at least, try to do it... so with that, if people are on for it, why dont we give it a blast, id love to see something up and running...

And from there...
Imagine, all / most euro social centres connected through simple streaming tek systems, to allow for wider vid conferences, look at business world to see how important a tool this is...
what would that lead to?
we tried this at WSF 2007 @ Kenya, unfortunately Ireland then couldnt collaborate in live time, through many faults including my own...
Anyway, its possible.
and now with imc-radio back, perhaps the time is right???

Seems to me that this could be done as a skype group call once per month - say hello in a group of 4 people who are willing to do an it says in the papers type discussion of posts and issues raised in them and try to get a couple of extra contributors (those involved in stories maybe) each month. Record the group call live and upload. It makes for something very achievable in a very short period of time.

Thanks for the responses. Indymedia.ie Radio is a thing that I've been throwing around in my mind for a while now (as well as a monthly pdf of the biggest stories of each month, but that idea's for another day).

With the wealth of contributors to the site (both individuals and groups/organisations) there should not be any problem getting high-quality material that is missed by the mainstream press to fill an hour a month and allowing them proper space to air their views and have them challenged if need be, rather than the twenty second soundbites that are normally allowed.

I suppose it would really require organistaion to get someone to interview the necessary people and then get it edited and then get the various editions collated and organised into a cohereny "show". Perhaps I'm being very niave, but it does not seem impossible: for example, in the past month interviews could have been carried out with Miriam Cotton about Reporting War, with CWI about the Airport Workers on Hunger Strike, with IPSC about the Photo Exhibition: Education under Occupation or the 60th Anniversary of Deir Yassan, with Pip, Damo, Ger, Foxey, Jot about Homelessness in Ireland, and so on.

Anyways, it's great to get a conversation like this started. Let's see where it might go from here.

I'm not sure that looking at the number of comments a story gets is always the best way of ascertaining if it is read or valued. On Andrew's audio, I've listened to all of them from the first half of the tour and like them and look forward to listening to the rest of them in a few weeks. It's not the sort of item whose newsworthiness depends on being listened to straight away. I don't have much by the way of news to add to them to though and in the absence of anything particularly useful to say, there's not much point in adding a comment.

I'm with ya! If you would like to make this happen, I'd be happy to contribute some time and content to the project.

But I am skeptical. I have tried to do this sort of thing in the past and it is much harder to organise than one would think. Yes, it is technically pretty easy - and these days you can get your mp3 hosted for free from any number of websites.

I sort of gave up on the idea of an online radio show a long time ago because i couldn't see the audience for it. I upload mp3's for long term historical or academic reasons - to be a record of a speech or historical event that may be useful to someone someday. It'd certainly be a very interesting endeavour to have an Indymedia.ie podcast once a month. I can't imagine it being too much work (although I don't really know much about going about it either).

It could run something along the lines of (I guess something similar to the format of DemocracyNow.org):

1) Main Headlines from indymedia.ie for this month - 5 mins
2) Musical interlude - 2 mins
3) Interview with a key activist for this month - 20 mins
4) Musical interlude - 2 mins
5) Documentary report from one the "Featurised Stories" from this month - 15 mins
6) Musical interlude - 2 mins
7) Second interview from an activity for this month - 10 mins

Technology-wise, I suppose free software is available (or at least something like GarageBand that comes with iMacs would work), Skype for phone interviews, and the server at indymedia.ie to host.

Hmmm.... anyone interested to giving it a go?

Eh up, we started a radioshow in Nottingham, UK back in January and run a wicked monthly show now with local news, commentary and local tunes.

In this last month's show we had some info about the week of action for autonomous spaces; we talked to Dan who returned from the Antartic on a whale saving mission and and we've been talking to someone from Nottingham's Defy ID group on whats happening locally on resisting the government's proposed ID card system. Also an interview about legal advice for activists, a promotion about a recently setup cooperative dealing with activist equipment and a report from those who joined the blockade at Aldermaston Nuclear Weapons Establishment near Reading from Nottingham and Leicester. Oh, and a whole load of cracking good home grown music including Idiot Joy, 3am Association and Muteqx.
