People throughout Northern Ireland were rightfully disgusted at Iris Robinsons recent outburst of homophobia, these remarks included comparing homosexuals to child abusers and asserting that it is the duty of government to “uphold God's law.”
These hate filled comments will only serve to legitimise violence against gay people. Her original comments were in response to a homophobic attack on one of her own constituents. Rather than discuss curing the hatred that promotes such attacks, she chose to suggest that the victim required to be cured of his homosexuality.
In expressing such disgusting views she is clearly trying to undermine the self esteem and self worth of the entire gay community. This is shocking given figures on incidents of self harm, suicide and suicidal thoughts amongst young gay people in Northern Ireland.Robinsons Disgraceful views have been clearly rejected by the majority of people, Recent Internet polls and blogs have shown that contrary to what Iris Robinson may think, people throughout NI support full sexual liberation . In the largest poll so far conducted over 70% of people called for her immediate resignation. At a time when our gay community is under such serious attack it is extremely important that we stand in full opposition to homophobia.
A public meeting will take place on Thursday 31st July in the Holiday Inn Hotel, with representatives from various organisations to show their opposition to these comments and call for an immediate resignation from Iris Robinson. All those who wish to fight for a more equal and diverse society are encouraged to come along!
