Earth Summit Ireland's Alternative Report to be launched this month.
The Irish Government will present their Country Report on how Ireland has progressed since The Earth Summit in Rio in 1992 to the World Summit on
Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in September. In preparation for the summit, a number of concerned Environmental NGOs established the organisation Earth Summit Ireland in April 2002, with the aim of putting forward the NGO perspective on Irish environmental progression in the ten years since Rio.
The United Nations Environment Programme commissioned Earth Summit Ireland to write a report based on the Irish Environmental NGO experience. The report consists of stories contributed by Environmental NGOs on their experience of fighting for environmental concerns in Ireland since 1992.
ESI held The First Preparing for WSSD Conference during the Convergence Festival in Temple Bar in April, before the commencement of the report
compilation process. It was clear at this conference that members of Environmental NGOs across the country had much to contribute, and so ESI promised a second conference.
Representatives from a wide range of ENGOs met on Saturday 6th of July in ENFO in Dublin. ESI designed the conference to enable the delegates to see what had been achieved so far, in order to make the report compilation process as inclusive as possible. During the day, the delegates had an
opportunity to look over the first draft report and contribute their own stories for inclusion.
The conference was generally agreed by all attendees to have been a great success. Many delegates felt that it had created a forum for ENGOs to come together to achieve a common goal. Subsequently, ESI received a wide range of stories promised during the conference. ESI are currently in the process of compiling the best into the paper report for Johannesburg. All stories will be included on a forthcoming CD-Rom.
The ESI Alternative Country Report is entitled 'Telling It Like It Is. Ten Years of Unsustainable Development in Ireland', and is now in its final stages of development. The official launch of the report will take place on August 22nd in ENFO in Dublin.
