On Sunday tens of thousands across Turkey attended the funerals of soldiers slain by the PKK. 15 soldiers were killed, twenty wounded and two are missing after the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) launched a cross border attack from their base in Iraq.

The Turkish army responded by attacking Communist positions inside Iraq and reportedly killing 23 militants. Protesters outside the Turkish Parliament on Sunday chanted, "Down with the PKK."

In 2007 US federal prosecutors started an investigation into the private US military firm Blackwater Worldwide and allegations that it illegally smuggling weapons to the PKK. After the Turkish army recovered US weapons from the PKK the Associated Press reported that officials had stated that there is enough evidence to file charges. Blackwater denies any knowledge of the arms transfer by an employee.

Many people have claimed the US and Israel support the Communist PKK in it's activities.
