Rethink Afghanistan is a ground-breaking, full-length documentary focusing on the key issues surrounding the war in Afghanistan.
In October 2001 The U.S. military begins its attack on Afghanistan, which it called “Operation Enduring Freedom”. Over eight years later in December 2009, President Barack Obama announced that the U.S. will be sending 30,000 more troops to the country. These and the 150,000 private sector war contractors employed by the occupation will result in ongoing weak security and corrupt government in the country. As the Afghan MP and women’s rights activist Malalai Joya put it in July 2009, "your governments have replaced the fundamentalist rule of the Taliban with another fundamentalist regime of warlords".
The majority of Afghans want a withdrawal of the foreign troops; they know that the ongoing occupation serves US/UK/NATO interests but not theirs.
Ireland - and in particular Shannon Airport has been providing support for this war and for the war in Iraq for many years. In 2009 alone almost quarter of a million U.S. troops used the airport, and their military cargo planes passed through regularly.
This event provides an opportunity for anyone who is interested to learn more about the war and its consequences, and to discuss Ireland's role in it.
Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
