Happily, they are "not stepping off to Afghanistan with the words of the prime minister ringing in their ears.” Ovinely, “they are going because the guy next to them is going.”
Hennessy's next recruiting blurb, it is rumoured, is for the US army's death squad in Afghanistan; Task Force 373. “It’s fun to shoot some people ... have a plan to kill everybody you meet " (Gen. James Mattis; Obama's new CentCom war lord).

Brave Irish people fight in every army in the world.

And in modern warfare of attrition and logistical depletion of the enemies resources and civilian population demoralisation, as in the recent demonstrations in Lebanon and Gaza, schools, hospitals, and other productive and supportive infrastrucure that will soak up personnel, treasure and a population's will to resist.
Nothing too brave about surrendering your individual autonomy and conscience to obey orders for money. It does, however, have the major advantage of saving you the trouble of growing a brain and becoming an adult,and substitutes the pleasure of gratifying your childhood fantasies of dominating the playground while your 'superior' officers reassure you right is on your side. And then there is all that camaraderie, just like being in the gang and putting down the uppity neighbours.Try thinking, soldier.
No I'm an EX-pacifist. I've no trouble with killing, but I will be sure its a last resort, and it wont be someone elses choice of target if it happens. It is, after all, as the phrase has it, a target-rich fucking environment. But the legitimate targets have all the weapons. The good news is there must be nearly enough ammo by now. I have endured the anglicisation of ireland,if you notice,particulary in dublin and up north there is a lot of this..Irish culture and language are not supported and EVEN DISCOURAGED.
Irish have always( NOT AS TRADITION AS SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO SAY),had to fight along english soldiers in the past..and now that is it a matter of choice,some are brainwashed into thinking,(as THEY CANNOT THINK)that joining the army in these times of conflict in other nations is A GOOD IDEA.

I've had the pleasure of meeting the wrong end of their hardware(fortunately they had the safety catches on).,but I've also worked with ex-squaddies in Germany and Netherlands. Some of them saw themselves much the same way as Paddy soldier in the blue cap in Lebanon.A lot of them were just lads from the lumpen who joined for the chance of getting a trade and an exit from the ghetto they got born into.I've also encountered the Brit rabid reaction animals up close in civies.
