Pope Leo, like Francis, is an open borders enthusiast for whom it seems no migrant should be turned away. Why are senior churchmen so blind to sense and deaf to public concerns on border security, asks Prof Roger Watson.

Rally to stop inhumane deportations Dublin 12th January 2010

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Thursday January 13, 2011 21:42author by Trade Union TVauthor email tradeuniontv at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

In a letter dated 22nd December 2010 to the Justice Minister, Dermot Ahern TD, the Irish Refugee Council called for an independent inquiry into the treatment of 34 Nigerian nationals, including 12 children, and 1 Irish citizen child, who were returned to Dublin from Athens following a technical fault on a Frontex* deportation plane. The Council also called for a halt to all deportations pending an independent review of deportation procedures.

Report from rally called by the Anti-Racist Network Ireland held yesterday at the Dáil.

"For years it has been known among the immigrant communities and the civic society that removals from the State are with abuse and disregard for human dignity. But never before has these abuses been authentically proved as no one has managed to return to expose what had happened.
The return of the Frontex flight on 16th December with all deportees from Greece due to technical fault is the first time it has happened in the past two decades. The narration on what happened during this flight is horrendous. It's a matter of time that the incidence like that of the Angolan born Mr Jimmy Mubenga (Jimmy died on 12 October 2010 after an attempt to deport him to Angola on a BA flight. According to news reports Jimmy died after allegedly being restrained by three guards from G4S, a company contracted (at the time) by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) as escorts ) who lost his life during removal in UK will happen here in Ireland if no drastic measures are taken. This is why ARN is fully encouraging the Irish Refugee Council to stand steadfast on its demands for an independent inquiry and that all deportations be suspended/stopped for now. "

Say, just for the hypothesis, you deported Bush/Cheyney/Rumsfeld&Co to Iraq for trial by relatives of the victims of depleted Uranium residues in their water and land.

I would consider that a "humane deportation". Pinochet, Marcos, The Shah, and all those escaped criminals being given shelter(often in the neo-colonial motherland)spring immediately to mind.

Or our own transoceanic escaped bankers might be hauled back for penal retribution for their crimes against that same humanity.

Well, I did say it was a theory. Meantime they use the law as an instrument of the rich to ensure they wont be disturbed by any ripple on their racist ponds, as when Micky McDowell decided getting born here was insufficient to qualify you for native Irish status.

I can think of a few humane deportations, starting with the Berties and Marys et al that have inflicted a return to emigration on our 'surplus' labour force now they have their sabotage near done.

Is there such a thing as a "humane" deportation? Rounding people up and putting them on a plane because they're black is always inhumane. It should be stopped for good, not "for now" or pending inquiries.
