Why did Eamonn Gilmore’s New Labour pre-Christmas jolly in Kilkenny (Nov 29 – 30) blow up in his face?

Who is the shadowy eminence grise behind Gilmore's Twenty First Century Commission?

Why were the party faithful reduced to discussing leaked extracts from the Twenty First Century Commission report in Kilkenny?

The Socialist Party has been in discussion with others on the left with a view to forming an Electoral Alliance for the Local Elections which will take place in June 2009. These discussions have been publicly carried in the pages of our paper "the Socialist" and on sites such as this. The Socialist Party has put forward a very positive proposal for a local election slate of candidates. It is important the slate would field credible candiates with a record in the their area that there is political agreement with the programme of the slate which will flow from discussions. We feel these issues among others mentioned in the material below are extremley important if we are to get aggreement. This is why in these proposals we have provided fuller elaboration of our position in an open, honest and constructive manner we hope that other groups will respond in kind. read full story / add a comment

Pat Breen, Fine Gael TD from Bunratty, showed that he's been listening to the lies about natural resources, and he believes them, when he spoke about Corrib in the Dáil.

The sad thing is that his acceptance of the nonsense peddled by Shell and the Green Party means that instead of an opposition testing and challenging the government we have a docile and pointless group of placemen waiting for a chance to get into government simply to get a few things for their constituents and jobs for their friends. read full story / add a comment

Political Quiz:

You were the Fianna Fáil Minister for Finance during the last few years. There is a massive economic crash landing happening because of your policies, which focused economic activity on selling houses to each other rather than building up things like education, culture, home grown industry etc. What do you do now?

1.Make the poor pay- strip funding from pensioners, students, schoolkids and the under-priviliged.

2.Blame the international situation.

3.Blame the people who voted against Lisbon.

4. Put your hands up, admit your mistakes, and invest in basic services which will make the recession a bit more bearable for everyone.

(hint- this is Fianna Fáil remember...)

Anyway, at least he's not Enda Kenny. read full story / add a comment

Obama has lost in ten of the last 12 opinion polls for the United States presidential election, 2008. His margin has between a 6point loss in the first week of September and a 4point loss in the last three days. Those who know how the USA voting public works blame this losing streak on Palin. It certainly seems to make sense as of the 57 US nationwide polls carried out thus far Mc Cain has only won 12.

Jonathan Freedland in today's "Guardian" represents well the disbelief of European journalists & to a great extent intellectuals that the voters of the USA, those enfranchised alone to make a decision which affects us all seem about to deride our faith & hope of the change Obama promised.

I on the other hand believe that the opinion poll data only confirms how little Europeans as well as US Democrats understood one of the most important socio-historical shifts in US citizens' perception of their own institutions & government. I argue that they've finally realised the importance of their vice-president. read full story / add a comment

Ogra Shinn Fein have produced a youth election broadcast for the upcoming by election in Enniskillen on Wednesday 17 September.

The youth electon broadcast urges young people from the relevant electoral ward to come out and vote for Sinn Fein’s candidate Debbie Coyle and visualises the advances that Sinn Fein have made in recent times.

It also includeds a number of short interviews with Mary Lou McDonald MEP and Fermanagh/South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew.

And it traces the strong legacy of republican candidates being elected in Fermanagh, most notably, the election of Bobby Sands MP, whilst on Hungerstrike in 1981.
